A forest products company and an energy business have teamed up to jointly plot their operating plans in the first agreement of its kind.

Canfor Inc and Suncor Inc, which mines oil and gas, have agreed to join forces for resource extraction on 650,000ha of land near Grande Prairie.

The intention of the “integrated land-use management” agreement is to reduce the environmental impact on the landscape by co-operating on building roads, replanting trees and protecting wildlife habitat.

Forest product and oil companies usually operate independently, with little co-operation about planning their temporary resource roads which stretch across the land, often disturbing the same areas twice.

The Alberta Forest Products Association is a promoter of integrated land-use management for environmental reasons.
