The Canadian forest industry has received the GLOBE Foundation Industry Award for Environmental Performance.

The Forests Products Association of Canada (FPAC), which comprises 30 of the country’s largest producers of wood, paper and pulp, was presented the award in Vancouver.

In January, FPAC became the first international industry association to require all its members to submit forest management practices to the scrutiny of independent, third-party certification audits. This entails certification to one of three internationally recognised forestry-specific standards.

FPAC estimates that by 2006 Canadian forests covering an area the size of Sweden, Finland and Norway combined will be certified.
