New legislation has brought the lengthy Canadian coastal forest industry labour dispute to an end.

The Coastal Forest Industry Dispute Settlement Act, approved by British Columbia’s legislature, prevents any further work stoppages or strikes in the industry.

It effectively ends the strike by thousands of members of the Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada which started on November 21.

The law also reinstates terms of the union’s expired contract with Forest Industrial Relations, which represents 45 forestry companies, and starts a process of mediation between the two sides with the power to introduce binding arbitration.
