Canada says it has won another round in the softwood lumber dispute with the US.

Its comments follow a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) panel’s decision to reject calculations for the countervailing element of duties on Canadian lumber imports.

The British Columbia Lumber Trade Council claims the panel unanimously found that the US commerce department had acted arbitrarily in its assessment of Canadian lumber producers. It now thinks the duty could be erased completely if the NAFTA decision is acted upon by the commerce department.

Canadian companies are liable to an average 18.8% levy for their US exports, plus an additional 8% anti-dumping duty.
