Rainforest Action Network, backed by indigenous communities, environmental groups, green building industry leaders and other stakeholders, is calling on the company to join a growing movement of multi-national corporations in bringing policies into alignment with best practices on governance, the environment and human rights.
Weyerhaeuser’s 100 top investors have been sent letters by the campaigners asking them to support shareholder activists who want the company to change its ways.
They want to see Weyerhaeuser adopt Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, respect the rights of indigenous communities and put a comprehensive environmental policy to protect endangered forests in place.
The campaigners plan to raise their concerns at Weyerhaeuser’s annual general meeting on April 20. The company will be called on to assess the feasibility of earning FSC certification by November this year, and asked for an independent board of directors to be appointed.
