Gordon Callander, from James Callander & Son, who became president of the UKFPA at its AGM on May 14, said the group would focus on the practical issues that affect the market, including striking a careful balance between supply and demand that will help to ensure that the sector continues to thrive and ensuring stabilisation after a recent period of change.
“We are hoping for a period of stabilisation after changes to the market in recent years,” said Mr Callander. “It is an unusual market in terms of supply and demand but we want to see the industry continue to thrive.”
One of the key areas the UKFPA would be watching was the supply and demand of roundwood timber. It would also be keeping an eye on the development of the biofuel and engineered timber markets, which could have both positive and negative impacts on the forest products sector, said Mr Callander.
