The Woodland Trust is calling for a 77,000ha expansion of woodland across the UK, saying it will make a substantial difference to people’s quality of life.
In its report “Space for People”, the Woodland Trust says that woods are good for health, wealth and well being, and that woodland contributes to the delivery of 11 of the government’s 15 quality of life indicators.
The Trust has developed a Woodland Access Standard for planners which recommends that no-one should live more than 500m from at least one area of accessible woodland of no less than two hectares in size and that there should be at least one area of accessible woodland of no less than 20ha within four kilometres of people’s homes.
