A C$100m emergency response plan has been launched by the British Columbia government in a bid to control the spread of the mountain pine beetle which is threatening forests in the province.
The unprecedented action follows news that the beetle could destroy 95% of all natural pine in BC’s forests if it is allowed to spread.
Premier Gordon Campbell has told the federal government that the province needs C$1bn over 15 years to deal with the problem.
