Joinery companies are brushing up on treatments and coatings in the second module of the British Woodworking Federation‘s (BWF) Timber Training Programme.

About a dozen BWF members have attended four training days held this year at Osmose, Akzo Nobel and Arch Timber Protection.

The treatments training deals with timber structure, types of treatment, health and safety, plus the supplier’s warranty. Coatings sessions cover type and constituents of coatings, water- and solvent-based systems and application techniques.

Magnus Willatts, development manager at Baldock-based ID Products, said: “Attending one of the training days gave us an insight not only into the way finishing materials really work, but also how this applies to the application in the factory.”

The BWF said its first module, which provides an understanding of softwoods and hardwoods, has already proved to be “hugely successful”.

The training programme was launched two years ago to plug gaps in the knowledge of those working in the joinery sector.
