More specifiers are opting for fully factory finished and glazed timber windows, according to a new survey.
An investigation carried out by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has revealed that 74% of those looking to use timber windows would choose fully factory finished, an increase of nearly 50% on its survey last year.
Research was based on a sample of architects, surveyors, building control officers, local authorities, housing associations and builders who had previously enquired about BWF accredited timber windows.
Of those surveyed, 72% said they would be prepared to pay between 10-20% more for a BWF accredited timber window, compared with 57% last year.
Maintenance costs are also less of a concern, with 47% agreeing that BWF-accredited timber windows are as easily maintained as those made from other materials.
“Now that specifiers and contractors see the value in terms of long-term cost savings and building life costs, we have a huge body of opinion in favour of timber” |

There was 100% agreement that BWF accredited timber windows are at least as good as the best windows made from other materials.
The BWF says the introduction of Part L has helped the swing towards factory finishing as on-site glazing is not considered ideal in meeting the regulations.
BWF director Richard Lambert said: ‘The fact that such a high proportion are buying timber indicates that their clients also recognise the benefits of BWF accredited timber windows.
