Mr Milliband, in his speech in Newham on June 6, said building homes would be a priority for the next Labour government.

He also said that for every £100 investment in the housing sector, just £5 went into building with £95 on housing benefit – a complete reversal from 30 years ago.

“Housing investment will stimulate growth, of this there is little doubt – indeed virtually all leading lobby groups are screaming out for government to find ways to stimulate investment in housing,” said Mr McIlwee.

“Current policy is not enough, it is merely tickling the edges whilst direct public investment in building houses continues to dwindle.”
