A certification standard developed specifically for prefabricated building systems was launched by BRE Certification at Interbuild.

The “System Build Standard, LPS 1272” gives manufacturers of building systems, such as timber frame and structural insulated panels, a recognised benchmark against which they can test and certify their products. In addition to building performance criteria, the standard also covers insurance and mortgage lender requirements.

BRE Certification said the absence of any comprehensive standards until now has meant companies have not had sufficient assurance needed to adopt such modern methods of construction.

Carol Atkinson, BRE Certification’s managing director, said: “We hope that the BRE Certification scheme will raise the quality and acceptance of prefabricated systems, helping them fulfil the demand for new homes in the UK.”
