Brazilian environment institute IBAMA has identified more than 150 ”ghost” companies trading timber in the state of Pará, according to the International Tropical Timber Organisation’s most recent market report.

The companies identified in IBAMA’s “ghostbusters” operation have reportedly provided false management plans and other documents in their bid to purchase and trade in illegal timber but pass it off as from approved logging areas.

Receipts examined by IBAMA inspectors were apparently from non-existent companies, while some timber truck plate numbers were those of cars and motorcycles.
