The kiln is designed to preserve the 13.4m-long timber sections, which were recently milled from an ancient trunk excavated in the Norfolk fens.

The kiln is made of a sandwhich of SmartPly OSB3 boards pabels packed with insulation, supplied by Coillte Panel Products.

Drying is expected to result in the width and length of each plank reducing by a third. The challenge will be to remove water while maintaining flat, straight and split-free boards.

Once dried, the timber will be used by woodworking students at the college helping ti create a table to be given to the nation to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
