The Builders Merchant Federation (BMF) has closed its retail membership category to concentrate on representing the manufacturer-merchant-contractor route to market.

The decision has only affected one member, who left the BMF on October 31.

“As we look at the big challenges which face our industry today and in the future, making common cause with DIY shops has all but fallen off the agenda,” said BMF managing director Chris Pateman.

He said the way forward for the BMF as a trade association was to concentrate solely on championing, enabling and supporting professional builders merchants.

The BMF represents more than 1,000 merchant outlets owned by 270 companies, as well as 200 building product manufacturers.
