The Forestry Commission (FC) is to use a new birdwatching centre in Scotland as a showcase for sustainably produced timber in construction.

A deal between the FC and the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club (SOC) will see the Commission provide some of its most-prized timber for SOC’s new birdwatching resource centre and head office at Aberlady, East Lothian.

The FC will use the centre to host visits by groups of building industry professionals, such as architects and specifiers, as well as holding regular forestry, architectural and conservation events.

The centre’s massive post and beam frame, designed, manufactured and erected by Carpenter Oak & Woodland Ltd, utilises 100-year Douglas fir trees from the FC’s award-winning Plodda Falls stand near Glen Affric. The beams and larch cladding were cut by James Jones & Sons Ltd’s Kirriemuir sawmill, while oak flooring was produced by Russwood of Newtonmore.

The centre is expected to open in July.
