Best-selling travel writer Bill Bryson has added his support to the Woodland Trust‘s campaign to buy Wales’ largest remaining ancient forest.

Just £10,000 more is needed in the trust’s bid to secure a £1.5m purchase deal for 352ha Wentwood Forest, near Newport.

Mr Bryson, who follows Dame Judi Dench in supporting the campaign, said the immense value of Wentwood should not be underestimated and called the purchase a “virtual one-off opportunity to safeguard it for future generations”.

The remaining money is required in the trust’s £100,000 public appeal, which when reached will trigger donations and grants from other sources.
