Enquiries have come in thick and fast at NuWood after its densified softwood flooring was selected for the new, ‘natural look’ house in the Big Brother TV series.

The company’s Nu Cherry strip flooring was chosen by the show’s designer, Maddy Swinglehurst, and is used throughout the main living area, set off with wood panelling and cork tiling on the walls.

It was supplied and installed by Andrews Timber of Sidcup, which stocks NuWood. The company also provided the internal decking and panelling for the house.

‘We were very pleased with the floor and we’ve had numerous enquiries following the programme’s start,’ said NuWood Ventures Ltd chief executive Bruce Matheson. ‘Chris Evans has also spoken highly of the floor twice on his Virgin Radio breakfast show. It’s been a tremendous show point for wood products. Maddy Swinglehurst has achieved a fine looking house.’

NuWood pre-sanded the boards and chamfered all the edges to minimise the need for on-site sanding which might have caused problems for cameras and microphones on the set. As the producers wanted a non-reflecting floor, it was finished in low-sheen oil.

NuWood’s range is based on standard New Zealand radiata pine, densified by impregnating a ‘cellulose type’ solution and through-stained to resemble hardwood. The company set up its UK sales and distribution base in Watford last year.
