Timber from a sunken cargo vessel which washed ashore on a remote beach near Eastbourne is to be burnt due to the inaccessible nature of the site.

Eastbourne Borough Council said difficulties with accessing Cow’s Gap meant timber from the Ice Prince, which sank in January, could not be collected and recycled like it was at other nearby beaches.

“It is not acceptable for the timber to remain where it is and therefore a variety of options for its removal have been considered,” said a council spokesperson.

“Timber exposed to sea water is not suitable for general use and it has therefore been decided that the only viable way is to burn the timber on site.”

The council expects the burning to be completed before the end of May.

More than 2,000 tonnes of timber was washed ashore when the Ice Prince sank off the coast of Dorset.
