British Columbia’s forests ministry has cast doubt on claims that companies are rushing to fell the best timber on land due to be handed back to the province under a reallocation plan.

The ministry’s rebuttal follows allegations levelled at Interfor and West Fraser at a recent forum sponsored by the Industrial, Allied and Woodworkers Union.

Roger Harris, provincial forestry operations minister, said Interfor is cutting more logs than its allowable annual cut this year after undercutting in recent years.

One forest district manager reported no signs of any abnormal logging levels.
