About 75 workers for International Forest Products (Interfor) face losing their jobs in the Hope area because of British Columbian provincial government plans to cut the company’s timber-cutting rights.

The government’s plans are a result of the Forest Revitalisation Act, which stipulates that provinces take back 20% of the annual allowable cut from all major licensees. About half is earmarked for First Nations and half for British Columbia Timber Sales for sale at public auction.

About 579,000 million m3 of Interfor’s three million m3 harvesting rights will be taken back by the province. The company said all its timber rights in the Hope area would be cut.
