British Columbia’s government has released its first-ever report on the state of the province’s forests.

The report, which is based on six indicators of sustainability, says the level of protected forests more than 140 years old has doubled since 1991 to 3.6 million ha. The figure includes 1.5 million ha of forest over 250 years old.

First Nations harvest volumes have grown to 3% of the provincial allowable annual cut in the past two decades.

A further two reports, based on a further 18 indicators, will be published in the future.
