The Timber Trade Federation (TTF), which worked with the programme’s makers, is encouraging members to watch the episode and highlight any inaccuracies in reporting either to the TTF’s head of communications & external affairs, David Hopkins, or through the online comments section of the BBC website.

"The TTF has worked closely with the producers and programme team to be as open and transparent as possible and present an accurate view of the modern timber industry. We’ve been assured that these points have been taken on board," said Mr Hopkins.

However, on the BBC website, a summary of the programme, entitled Jungle outlaws: The chainsaw trail, says illegal logging is "a lucrative trade from the stump to the checkout – that’s leading to the destruction of new swathes of vital rainforest".

It says reporter Raphael Rowe "spent six months tracking logs from Congo’s jungle, and discovers that new timber regulations are failing to stop illegally-felled wood getting into European stores and on to the consumer".

The programme will be screened at 8.30pm on BBC1.
