A bamboo construction system co-developed by the UK and India has passed full-scale earthquake resistance testing in Bangalore.

The system, developed by TRADA International in partnership with the Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute, suffered no damage during quake testing of up to 7.8 on the Richter scale at the Central Power Research Institute.

TRADA International’s Paul Follett said the results show buildings constructed with the method could have withstood the recent earthquakes in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Bam.

The findings of the project, funded by the UK’s department for international development, were presented at the seventh World Bamboo Congress in Delhi.
