The European Commission’s Competitiveness and Innovation agency is providing €1.6m to study market development of ModCell prefabricated straw panels regarded as a zero carbon construction material.

Balehaus, a two-storey bale and hemp-clad building constructed around a timber frame, has been closely monitored on the campus for two years and researchers believe it is proven as a durable system.

Lead researcher Professor Pete Walker said: "In all cases to date the building has met or exceeded requirements. For this technology to be extended insurance companies and mortgage lenders require industry certification."

The panels are made locally and by hand, and Balehaus architect Craig White said the project would have to explore opportunities for mass production.
