Balcas, which recently opened a £24m combined heat and power and pellet manufacturing plant in Invergordon, has shipped the first load of its brites wood pellets to Denmark.
The company burns timber from the north of Scotland to produce energy which is sold to the National Grid and produces fuel pellets – under the brites brand – suitable for heating domestic or commercial premises.
The first load of brites, bound for Avedoere, sailed out between the Cromarty Firth Sutors, carrying 2,700 tonnes of fuel for the Danes.
Balcas general manager Chris Connorton said it had been a complex project and the company had benefited “significantly” from Highlands and Islands Enterprise funding and advice.
“It is good to see the first load of brites go for export and to have the plant running 24/7 producing brites and green electricity.”
The Invergordon CHP plant employs 48 people and, using lodgepole pine produces 100,000 tonnes of brites a year.Balcas exports green fuel to Denmark
