Construction of a £400m-plus pulp mill in Scotland – capable of consuming 2 million tonnes of domestic timber per year – would be ‘viable’ if funding and a backer were found, according to a pre-feasibility study carried out by Scottish Enterprise.
The mill would displace pulp imports and exploit the anticipated huge growth in Scottish timber production. Potential sites have been identified in at least two areas of Scotland, while finance would be expected to come from banks, private equity, local organisations and industry, confirmed project director Ed Gillespie.
