Door manufacturer Vicaima has turned to automotive manufacturing technology to help it improve efficiency at its Portuguese factory.

Six anthropomorphic robots have been added to its production line at Vale de Cambra, which have been adapted to the manufacture of doors with the addition of a gripper system to pick and hold products.

This has helped to reduce the physical burden on its workforce and enable them to carry out other tasks at the factory including quality control checks, according to Vicaima. It has also increased productivity by 10% on the lines fitted with the technology.

“It has been used to great effect in the car industry and the potential benefits to our own industry are immense,” said Vicaima managing director Filipe Ferreira.

“These new systems are enabling us to increase productivity and flexibility whilst reducing costs and so remain ahead of the competition in the manufacture of interior doors.”

Vicaima added that it has plans to install further anthropomorphic robots throughout new production lines, “where greater benefits can be achieved”.
