One of the last remaining timber mills in Baradine, New South Wales, may close following the state government’s creation of new conservation areas.

A Gunnedah Timbers shareholder has indicated that several of the company’s shareholders are keen on securing a government-funded compensation package.

However, a member of the New South Wales parliament has hinted that compensation may fail because of a campaign to maintain the viability of logging in the Pilliga Forest.

The government is creating 350,000ha of new conservation areas in the Brigalow Belt.
