The Papua New Guinea (PNG) environmental lawyer, who won the international accolade for her work in the courts to save endangered PNG forests, has teamed up with Greenpeace in the campaign.
Greenpeace spokesperson Danny Kennedy maintains that about 10% of Australia’s timber imports are from protected forest areas.
“The Australian government has said it is at least 9%; we think it’s probably higher,” he said.
“Four hundred million dollars worth or more of hardwood is coming in from nearby forested areas, particularly in New Guinea and Indonesia, and we need that to be stopped. “
He said that as well as being illegal and destructive, the practice was an abuse of human rights.
