An investigation by independent assessors at Asia Plywood Company Sdn Bhd (APC) has confirmed that the company has not complied with some chain of custody requirements.

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) ordered the company to stop describing its plywood as MTCC-certified until further notice after discrepancies were found.

Independent assessor SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd said the company has not complied with some chain of custody requirements with regard to the recording and monitoring of the input of MTCC-certified logs, and the production and exports of plywood described as MTCC-certified for the period May 2005 to July 29, 2005.

However, the visit also confirmed that APC uses legally-sourced logs from both MTCC-certified and non MTCC-certified forests.

APC said it is taking immediate action to comply with the chain of custody requirements and these actions will be verified by SIRIM QAS.

MTCC will decide what measures to take once it has received SIRIM’s report.
