An inititative promoting accountability and care in the use of timber and wood-based panel finishing materials has helped Arch Coatings win the ISO 14001 environmental management standard.

Arch’s Product Stewardship scheme, developed in conjunction with the British Coatings Federation, covers storage and handling, product risk assessment, supplier assessment, community outreach, industrial hygiene, and medical and toxicology issues. It now forms part of the company’s customer care programme.

The initiative helps customers with technical issues about Arch’s products, including potential environmental risk factors. Bouncy Castle makers Inflatable World Leisure and door manufacturer Leaderflush + Shapland are two customers already benefiting from the scheme.

An environmental risk assessment of Arch’s Knottingley site found volatile organic solvent emissions and energy use to be low, while the environmental consequences of accidental material spillages were small.
