A six-strong delegation of American producers of eastern white pine have been on a fact- finding mission in the UK checking out market opportunities.

Representing the North Eastern Lumber Manufacturing Association (NELMA), the delegates attended ASFI at the NEC, Birmingham, and visited two timber importers and a furniture manufacturer.

Jim Outram, chairman of NELMA’s marketing committee, said: “We’re getting about to find out what’s happening over here and what opportunities there may be for us.”

The visit was co-ordinated by Eddie Pearce, European marketing director for American Softwoods. He said: “Eastern white pine is particularly suited to the manufacture of furniture as it’s attractive, very easy to work with and takes stain well. This sort of timber is already imported into the UK from Canada.”
