Imports of American red oak across Europe have increased by 13% in volume – with much coming in to the UK.

British imports were up by 137% to 9,340m³ in the first half of 2001 compared to the same period last year.

Red oak remains less used in Europe than American white oak, but is a prime species for flooring and is to be increasingly promoted by the American Hardwood Export Council.

AHEC’s European director David Venables said: ‘We are hoping that the continued growth of the flooring market will help to improve the consumption of this resource.’

American black walnut is also enjoying a revival –imports this year are up 51% across the EU and 50% in Britain.

The panel trade also reports an increase in sales of walnut veneered products in the UK. The total value of American hardwood veneer shipments was up 1% in the EU, driven by increases in Italy and the UK. These compensated for a drop in Germany.
