Wildfires have burned a record 5 million acres of forest in Alaska so far this summer, beating the previous high of 4.94 million acres set in 1957.

Hot weather and lightning strikes have been blamed for the severity of the fires, which so far number more than 600.

Fire services are hoping for heavy rain to douse many blazes still raging, including the 1.1 million acre Taylor Complex fire.

Scientists say the fires could be a possible sign of climate change.
