Ontario’s provincial government has announced a C$220m aid package to help the struggling forestry industry.

The money, being released during the next three years, will pay for the building of forest access roads, as well as reducing stumpage fees paid by companies for cutting timber on government land.

The aid package, the fourth since last summer, is designed to bring relief for the forestry sector, which has suffered from growing energy and road-building costs, plus a higher Canadian dollar.

Several mills have recently closed and some 4,000 workers made redundant.

The provincial government pledged C$330m in aid last September
