More than 120 architects, including many of India’s most influential specifiers, attended the first American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) promotional seminar in New Delhi.

The theme “materials and technology” enabled AHEC’s European director David Venables to demonstrate the growing fashion for temperate hardwoods in building design in Europe, and how American species are performing for top architects.

Mr Venables said the event was a great start for AHEC’s programme in India and added: “The response from the architects was very positive and a real indication that the design community in India wants to embrace global fashions and use more wood in building.

“The construction boom which is happening all over India right now could provide a real opportunity to widen the range of hardwoods used in this market.”

AHEC believes that demand for temperate hardwoods is growing and that the market is moving away from its dependence on teak and mahogany.
