Central African countries have agreed to protect the vast Congo Basin rainforest from illegal logging.

States signed a treaty in Brazzaville, Congo pledging to preserve the forest region, which stretches across 200 million ha and six countries.

WWF has warned that the forests could disappear within 35 years unless tough action is taken.

Kenya’s environment minister Wangari Maathai, who is to become a roving ambassador for the Congo Basin, said corruption must be dealt with to succeed.
