Associated British Ports plc (ABP) has started legal proceedings against Jewson for allegedly failing to import agreed levels of timber to Newport, according to Lloyd’s List.

ABP has issued a writ at the High Court claiming that Jewson, which has a 20-year lease at North Dock in Newport, failed to import the agreed level of 25,000m3 of timber.

ABP alleges that Jewson is liable for £154,819.28 extra rent.

Other allegations against Jewson in the writ include a failure to import 27,000 tonnes of sheet materials, 85,000m3 of carcassing wood and 45,000m3 of sawn joinery.

ABP says it asked Jewson for the extra rent in December last year. It further demanded the money from Jewson parent company Saint-Gobain Building Distribution this summer.

The writ says the money has not yet been paid.

ABP and Jewson declined to comment on the case.
