Pear Stairs, which employs 60 people and ships 500 staircases a month, supplies national builders merchants and housebuilders. Each staircase, some in sections up to 2.5m, were bubble-wrapped by hand for long journeys and on-site storage.

Orion Packaging Systems installed a pit-mounted orbital wrapper costing £14,000, which has reduced manual handling and the number of packs required as larger packs can now be created.

Pear Stairs manager Clive McNamee said: “It was clear we could not continue to wrap by hand given the increased throughput at the factory. Not only has staff time been freed up, our packs are a lot more professional and better protected.”

Mr McNamee said the company had invested more than £2m during the past four years, including a five-axis CNC machine.
