Hardwood specialist Whitmore’s Timber has opened a new £350,000 mill to machine of a wide range of English and Continental timbers.
The company, based in Claybrooke Magna near Lutterworth, invested in a new building, two Stenner re-saws, two Wadkin straightline edgers and a dust extraction system.
Nottingham-based AL Dalton Ltd supplied the equipment, which will mainly machine English and Continental oak, maple and ash, plus North American temperate timbers and selected tropical hardwoods such as sapele.
Whitmore’s, a fully independent company which was formerly linked with Smee Timber Company Ltd, says the mill enables faster and more efficient service to customers as part of a long-term modernisation programme.
It also allows the company to place greater emphasis on supplying fresh sawn products for construction.
The investment follows yard facility improvements which cost in the region of £250,000. More equipment is expected to be purchased in the future to further aid efficiency.
Whitmore’s specialises in supplying hardwoods for restoration and conservation projects. It supplied timbers for Norwich Cathedral Visitors’ Centre, the Gold Award winner of the Wood Awards 2004.
