A Walter Woodtronic TCT saw blade grinder is the latest installation at Carbide (UK) Ltd which has invested more than £600,000 in Walter technology in the past six years.

Walter machinery is being used by the Kingston upon Hull company in the design and manufacture of complex special-purpose tooling, such as specialised solid carbide cutters and disposable tipped tooling, for the UK woodworking sector.

Carbide’s new Woodtronic CNC 5D circular saw blade grinder is fitted with three-pallet loaders and capable of continual machining of up to 120 blades of 150mm-750mm diameter in random order.

An optional cross slide function on the machine’s saw blade indexing unit enables tooth pitch variations to be automatically calculated, reducing set-up times when processing batches of blades of varying diameter.

Laurie Witherwick, Carbide’s director, said the Woodtronic allows the company to produce a bigger number of tooth geometries than previously.

The Woodtronic is Carbide’s second 5D machine. Other Walter installations in the past six years include three Helitronic five-axis tool grinders for the manufacture of solid carbide cutters, complemented by the Cyber Grinding tool simulation software package.
