Michael Walker, chairman of the Walker Group, has received an honorary Doctorate of Technology from Napier University.

Mr Walker joined the family importing and sawmilling firm of James Walker Ltd as a sales representative in 1955. At that time the company had 60 employees.

Since the 1970s, a housebuilding division, Walker Homes, and several English timber companies have been incorporated into the group. It now employs more than 800.

Mr Walker as served as a council member and Scottish chairman of TRADA and was president of the Scottish Timber Trade Association and chairman of its industrial committee. He was appointed honorary consul for Finland in 1989 and recently Knight First Class of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
