German company I van Roje & Sohn believes it is the first sawmill in the world to have the carbon footprint of its timber products independently certified.

Managing director Ulrich van Roje said the certificate, issued by TUV Rheinland demonstrated the sawmiller’s environmental focus and that using wood products reduced CO2 emissions. The analysis covered the whole process from harvesting through to transporting the logs to the mill and production of the sawn product. The assessment concluded that the CO2 emissions for the production of 1m³ of sawn wood did not exceed 36.28kg.

Van Roje has also demonstrated its environmental commitment with the installation of 6,000m² of photovoltaic panels. The panels produce around 600kW/p.
