A finishing line which applies waterborne stains and primers to window components has been installed at Jeld-Wen‘s Melton Mowbray plant by Universal Finishing Systems of Flintshire.

Kevin Whittle, commercial director at Universal Finishing Systems, said: “Jeld-Wen’s decision to invest in our technology represents the way in which larger joinery companies are changing their approach to the supply of finished or semi-finished products to the building industry.

“Before installing our equipment, Jeld-Wen used large dipping tanks for their windows which took up masses of factory floor space and caused health and safety concerns. The new installation has overcome these problems and also reduced the volume of coating that was previously required for the base coating process.”

The vacuum coating system applies coatings evenly to all four sides of the window in one pass. All the coating is recycled, reducing waste and cost, and the internal parts of the machine are Teflon coated making it quick and easy to clean.

The machine was supplied with a gas infra red drying system, the Mini Dry 2, a new model specially designed to meet Jeld-Wen’s requirements. It is suitable for drying waterborne coatings at speeds up to 40 m/min and can be operated from either mains gas or LPG, keeping running costs low.

Prices for Universal’s finishing systems start at around £40,000.
