Members of the UK Forest Products Association’s harvesting and contracting committee have received valuable updates on timber harvesting machinery and in-forest laser scanning technology at their recent meeting at the UK headquarters of John Deere Forestry UK Ltd, near Carlisle.

They were given an update on harvesting machines and the opportunity to see the latest E-Series fowarders and harvesters.

In addition, Enda Keane of Tree-Metrics Technology gave an insight into the development and use of in-forest 3D laser scanning systems and associated software technology for assessing the quality of standing trees, a tool designed to optimise value recovery from the forest.

Members also received a progress report on a harvesting field trial of a diesel fuel additive, which claims to improve engine efficiency and fuel consumption by tackling microbial contamination of diesel fuel.
