Earlier this year our members voted not to proceed with integration into ConFor and consequently, UKFPA continues as an independent association, committed to representing the interests of its members throughout the UK.

As UKFPA approaches its 10th anniversary, a number of things are clear; it is an organisation that is valued and respected by its members and others, there is a strong sense of ownership and belonging and co-operation and collaboration has been a hallmark of our working, combined with a ‘can do’ attitude.

This spirit is, if anything, even stronger today. Now is the time for regeneration; our AGM next month will appoint a new president and several new members to our executive council, who will undoubtedly bring renewed energy and focus to our work. There is much to be done, but we cannot and should not do it in isolation.

We must all focus our attention on developing our sector; promotion, education, training, R&D and market development all need to be addressed, together with a myriad of practical, day to day issues.

We must also ensure that our interests are not undermined by others. Closer and co-ordinated working between the timber organisations will undoubtedly be the key to success.

The ‘silo mentality’ that some are keen to quote is not readily recognisable in our experience – the timber community in the UK is far too small for the various organisations not to work together for the common good.

I feel increasingly confident that these sentiments are echoed by our many partners in the timber industry. Whilst our individual resources may, by some standards be limited, closer working with like-minded others can achieve a great deal; our most valuable commodity is our time, let’s make the most of it.
