The Triple-Length Continuous (TLC) Dry Kiln has been co-developed by USNR and Pollard Lumber of Georgia.

The first prototype was installed at Pollard’s Appling mill about 10 months ago, while the second was introduced to TR Miller’s pole facility in Brewton, Alabama.

Andy Pollard, owner of Pollard Lumber, said: “This kiln has been a major project for us from conception to installation. I believe it has taken us from being one of the poorest kiln driers to one of the best kiln driers of southern yellow pine.”

The TLC is three times the length of traditional kilns and has an open-ended design with no doors. The drying process allows wood to travel through the kiln at variable rates based on temperature and moisture content.

The double-track TLC features lumber stacks running in opposite directions so heat from dried lumber preheats green lumber packs, while moisture coming off green timber conditions the dry wood.

USNR claims the TLC can dramatically reduce kiln energy requirements and double production capacity at a time of escalating energy costs.
