Birmingham timber and panel products importer Palmer Timber has increased its laminating capacity with a Taylor clamping system.

The investment in the Taylor Rotary Clamp Carrier System, supplied by JJ Smith, is designed to meet increasing demand for the company’s range of laminated timber standard and special mouldings.

Palmer had previously contracted out its laminating operation but it realised there would be a number of benefits of bringing the operation in-house. As well as increased output, this included the ability to offer larger sections and longer laminated products (up to 150mm thickness) to its customers.

The Taylor system supplied is a 6.3m long 30 section semi-automatic hydraulic clamp carrier equipped with dual independent clamp tighteners and component flatteners, meaning two operators can work in tandem to maximise production output.

A conveyorised doctor roll PVA glue applicator and glue transfer pump was also supplied.

The system has been in full daily production since installation in March, with the main components manufactured being handrail sections, stair strings, joinery sections and newel posts.

Timbers used include Scandinavian redwood and whitewood, clear softwoods from North and South America and hardwoods from all around the world.

Palmer operations manager Ian Cox said he was pleased with the machinery’s performance.

“Having a machine as versatile as the Taylor means we can now offer our customers a wide variety of laminated hardwood and softwood components with short lead times,” he said.
