A Peterlee-based mantelpiece and fireplace surround manufacturer has introduced the Hoffman jointing system to its production operations.

Suncrest is using a Hoffman MU2 bench-mounted keyway router to cut keyway slots in a variety of materials, including solid timbers, veneered boards and MDF. Hoffman serrated dovetail keys are then used to create permanent joints.

The company said the system solved the problems of labour intensive bottlenecks, multi-process stapling, pinning of joints and long glue-setting times in clamping stations.

Suncrest said accuracy and durability of joints was crucial to the long-term performance of its products, which experience wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity in their working environment.
